Jones Weems, farmer and stock raiser on Section 27, was born in Franklin Township, Newton Co., Mo., November 6, 1839, and is the son of John and Nancy (Isbell) Weems. He attained his growth in his native county, and at the breaking out of the late war he shouldered his musket and enlisted in the Southern army. He was all through the war, and was a brave and gallant soldier. He was severely wounded at Wilson’s Creek, and again at Prairie Grove. At the termination of hostilities he returned to his home in Newton County, and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He here married Miss Mary F. Powers, who was born February 2, 1849, in Neosho Township, Newton Co., Mo., where she was reared; she is the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Boyd) Powers, her father being a native of North Carolina. To Mr. and Mrs. Weems were born two sons and four daughters: Lula Ona, Vita Minerva, Nancy Elizabeth, Joseph Henry, Bertha Frances and John A. Mr. Weems is the owner of eighty acres of excellent land in Newtonia Township, and twenty acres in Franklin Township. He has been a member of the school board in his district for some time, and is well respected by all. He and Mrs. Weems are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
