John W. Yeoman, farmer, is the son of William Yeoman, who was born in New York, but afterward went to Ohio with his parents. He (William), who was a minister of the Gospel, married Miss Julia A. Sanders, who bore him five children: John W., Ossie, Annie, Methan and Walter. Mr. Yeoman moved to Ross County, Ohio, where he lived six years, and then proceeded to Jasper County, Ind., settling upon a farm of 580 acres, and there he remained until 1869, when he came to Missouri, and settled in Lawrence County. Here he is now living, at the age of seventy-seven years, on a farm two miles east of Sarcoxie, still engaged in his ministerial duties. He is an Old School Baptist, is a Democrat in politics, and a hard-working man. The grandfather of William Yeoman came from England before the War of the Revolution, and during that great struggle was on the side of the colonists. At one time he was taken out by the Tories to be hung, but saved his life by praying for his captors, and received a whipping instead. Walter Yeoman, son of the above, and grandfather of John W. Yeoman, was born in New York, and moved to Fayette County, Ohio, where he died. John W. Yeoman, the subject of our sketch, was born on his father’s farm in Fayette County, Ohio, in 1840, and learned farming in early life. In 1861 he married Miss Rebecca Schall, daughter of Jonathan and Patty (York) Schall, and to them were born six children: William H., Jonathan W., Allen J., Robert A., Martha M. and Annie B. After marriage Mr. Yeoman settled on a farm in Jasper County, Ind., where he remained until 1861, when he moved to Lawrence County, Mo., and here his first wife died. He then married Mrs. Nancy Jarei, formerly Miss Nancy Alberty, of Newton County, and this union resulted in the birth of two children, Amelia J. and George B. In 1887 Mr. Yeoman moved on his present farm of 100 acres. He is a Democrat in his political opinions, and in religious views a Baptist. He has held the offices of school superintendent and school director, and stands high in the opinion of all his acquaintances. In 1864 Mr. Yeoman enlisted in Company G, One Hundred and Fifty-fifth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He is a prosperous farmer, and a law-abiding citizen.
