John W. Whitlock, dealer in general merchandise at Granby, Mo., was born in Hart County, Ky., May 29, 1842, son of James B. and Elizabeth (Gill) Whitlock, who were Kentuckians by birth, and became the parents of three children. They located in Neosho, Mo., in 1852, and there the father followed agricultural pursuits, and John W. spent his early life. At the breaking out of the war the latter enlisted, under Col. Cravens, in the State service, and shortly afterward joined Col. Coffee’s regiment, following Gen. Joe Shelby in his varying fortunes until his discharge in the fall of 1865. He returned to Newton County, and was for a time occupied in mining, but afterward went to Kansas, where he remained two years engaged in the grocery business. He began merchandising in Newton County in 1874, and since that time has been numbered among the leading merchants of the town. June 10, 1871, Mr. Whitlock was married to Miss Nellie Frasier, of Granby. She was born in Fredericktown, Mo., and is the mother of four children: William F., Gibbon E., Hattie M. and Nora. Mr. Whitlock is a member of lodge and chapter in the Masonic order.
