Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John W. North, attorney at law, Neosho, Mo., was born in South Lincolnshire, England, March 2, 1838, and is the seventh son of Reuben and Mary A. (Webster) North, natives of England, and the parents of twelve children. They came to the United States in 1848, and settled first in New York and then in Wisconsin. John W. North’s early days were spent in attending school in winter, and working on the farm during the summer. At the age of twenty years he began teaching the young idea, until the breaking out of the late war, when he left the school-room and joined the First Wisconsin Infantry; was discharged on account of injuries received while on duty, returned to Wisconsin in 1867, and came to Newton County, Mo., purchasing land, but was unable to do farm work owing to the injuries sustained while in the army. Becoming a disciple of Blackstone, he, in 1875, was admitted to the bar, and has given the practice of law his attention up to the present date. He served as city attorney of Granby, and in 1878 he canvassed the Thirteenth Congressional District with Judge Ritchey in the interest of the Greenback party; in 1880 he was made chairman of the State Central Committee, and stumped the entire State in the interest of that party at great pecuniary sacrifice. As a lawyer M. North is painstaking and successful, and is a ready and eloquent speaker. When he takes a case victory is almost sure to be on his side. Martha Leach, of Yorkshire, England, but who became a resident of Wisconsin in 1860, became his wife, and they have three children: Charles W., Frederick and William Henry. Mr. North is a member of the Congregational Church, and is a Select Knight in the A. O. U. W.
