Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John R. Stamps, a successful agriculturist and the son of E. C. and Sarah D. (Young) Stamps, was born four miles from Gainesborough, Jackson Co., Tenn., October 28, 1S55. The parents were both natives of that State, and their ancestors had long lived there. John R. Stamps left his native State in the year 1877, and moved across the “Father of Waters” until he reached Missouri, and there located in Newtonia Township. While near Rocky Comfort, in the last mentioned State, he met and married Miss Bell Kelly, the daughter of William J. and Ann Eliza (Parks) Kelly, old and respected citizens of Newton County. The fruits of Mr. Stamps’ marriage were four children, one son and three daughters, who are named as follows: Charles E., Sarah Etta, Ann Eliza and Carry Lizzabeth. Mr. Stamps is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance, and is a much respected citizen.
