John Ezekiel Putman, an enterprising farmer of Newton County, Mo., was born in Gordon County, Ga., February 6, 1851, and there attained his growth, being reared a farmer’s boy. He is the son of Elijah and Mary E. (Dodds) Putman, and the grandson of Ezekiel Putman, of North Carolina stock. The grandfather of Mary E. Dodds was a native of Scotland. In 1868 John Ezekiel Putman left his native State, and after spending two years in Alabama, came to Missouri in 1871, settling in Newton County, where he invested in land and engaged in tilling the soil. While in the State of Alabama he chose for his companion in life Miss Sarah E. Grimes, the daughter of Lewis Grimes, and she bore him the following named children: James B., Bertha (deceased), Alice, Grace, George, Hortense, John (deceased), Lewis Chrisman and an infant daughter. Mr. Putman has been a member of the school board in his district for nine years, and is considered a good and much respected citizen. His wife is a member of the Christian Church.
