John B. Murray, attorney, of Neosho, Mo., was born in Lewis County, Va., of Irish parentage, his father, Luke Murray, having come to America in 1846, and in 1850 moved to Virginia, and settled on a farm, where the subject of our sketch was born, July 11, 1857. During the war the elder Murray met with the misfortunes coming to Virginians at that time, and the year 1865 found him with a large family and little money, so that the next year, with a view to improving their condition, the family removed to Providence, R. I., where John B. began battling with the stern realities of life as a factory boy. Not content, however, with this occupation, he managed to acquire a good education by attending evening schools, after his day’s work was done, and in time learned the jeweler’s trade, at which he worked for some years. During this time he concluded to study law, and availed himself of every opportunity he could to pursue this study; and, with a view of furthering this end, he moved to Neosho in 1885, where he found a friend and adviser in George Hubbert, Esq., under whose preceptorship he was prepared for active law practice. He was admitted to the bar in February, 1887, and has since applied himself to the practice of his chosen calling. He is a close student, and the cases with which he has been connected show great care in their preparation. He was married in 1887 to Miss Katie Trainor, of Providence, R. I.
