Joe Koenig is the eldest of four children of John and Julia A. (Cornue) Koenig, and was born in 1851, and reared in Alton, Ill. The father was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and came to the United States in 1840, locating at Alton, where he lived about thirty years. He moved to Newton County, Mo., in 1871, and there died in 1881 at the age of sixty years. He was the owner of 150 acres at the time of his death; in religious views he was a Catholic, in politics a Democrat. His children are the subject of this memoir, Victor, Francis and Caroline. Joe, the eldest of these, was reared to manhood in Alton Ill., and there learned the painter’s trade. He came to Missouri with his father, and married Mary Seifert. They have four children: Francis, Julia, Joseph and Clem. Mr. Koenig as always lived on the old homestead, and is a hard-working and law-abiding citizen. He is a Democrat, and a member of the Catholic Church.
