Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Job Ratliff, farmer at Neosho, Mo., is one of the pioneers of Newton County; was born in Tenhessee August 17, 1810. His father, James Ratliff, was a native born Virginian, and his mother, whose maiden name was Sarah Fisher, was born in the same State. The parents came to Newton County, Mo., in 1833, and settled at Grand Falls. To their marriage were born twelve children. When a boy Job Ratliff went to Kentucky, and from that State to Sangamnon County, Ill., thence to Fort Smith, Ark., and in 1832 he came to Newton County, Mo. He was reared on a farm, and has since followed that occupation, he now owns 378 acres of valuable land adjoining the town of Neosho. January 5, 1832, he married Miss Sarah J. Marcus, who was born in Arkansas March 4, 1814, and died October 28, 1842, leaving five children: James P. (since deceased, was the first white male child born in the County); Mary Jane (wife of Austin Merrill), Sarah F. (wife of Robert Herrell), William M. and Jessie (both deceased). Mr. Ratliff’s second marriage occurred November 11, 1843, with Arrenah Gentry, a native of Tennessee, born December 17, 1827. She died November 10, 1873. There were eleven children born to this union, eight of whom are living: John G., Amanda E. (now Mrs. Phillips), Trusten P., Milton S., Flora M. (wife of Jesse Centres), V. C. and Lula A. B. Trusten P. Ratliff, son of the above, was born and reared in this county, and has made farming his vocation in life. He owns over 200 acres of good land, and is one of the county’s representative farmers. Mr. Job Ratliff is in comfortable circumstances, reliable in all his dealings, and above reproach.
