Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James W. Brunk, attorney at law, Neosho, was born in Tazewell County, Va., September 9, 1850, but was reared in Lee County. His parents, Christly and Hannah (McDonald) Brunk, were both natives of Montgomery County. Va., and to their marriage were born ten children, eight of whom are now living. James W., the eighth child, was reared principally in his native State, and then moved to Boone County, lad., where he remained one year, and in 1870 he came to Livingston County, Mo. He attended school at Chillicothe, and subsequently became a law student in the office of Hon. Charles Mansur of that place; he was admitted to the bar July 10, 1876, and one year later went to Pineville, McDonald County, where he remained until 1885; he then came to Neosho. November, 1879, Mr. Brunk married Miss Addle LaMance, of Pineville, McDonald County, daughter of J. P. LaMance, one of the earliest settlers of that county, and they have one son, Virgil H.
