Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James F. Moffett is a son of Calvin M. Moffett, a prosperous merchant of Randolph County, Mo., whose wife was Elizabeth Testement, a daughter of Abraham Testement, and the following are the names of their children: Mollie, James F., Celia, Thomas and Hattie. They moved to Newton County in 1866, and the father was a merchant and livery man of Granby for many years. He owned nine large farms, consisting in all of over 1,500 acres. He was a Republican in politics, and a Union man during the war. His widow resides in Granby. Their son, James F., was born in Randolph County, in 1865, and was but one year of age when he was brought to Newton County. He received a common-school education, and in July, 1886, was married to Annie Lucas, a daughter of Francis and Catherine (Britton) Lucas, who were from the “Hoosier State.” Mrs. Moffett was born in Porter County, Ind., about fourteen miles from Valparaiso, and came to Missouri with her parents in 1878. Mr. and Mrs. Moffett have one son, James Francis, born in August, 1877. Mr. Moffett has a fine farm of 154 acres, and is a prosperous young farmer.
