James F. Hubbard was born in 1848, of English descent. His greatgrandfather, a Virginian and a Revolutionary soldier, was one of the pioneer settlers of Tennessee, his son William, who was born in Virginia, coming with him. The latter, with his wife and seven sons, came to Newton County, Mo., in 1844, and located on a farm now occupied by his descendants. He was a member of the Baptist Church, a Mason and a prosperous and successful farmer. His sons are Pleasant, Wiley, William R., Dennis, Rollo and Lee. William R. was born in Tennessee in 1825, and came to Newton County with his father when a young man. He was married to Susanna Bell, of Tennessee, and four sons were the result of their union: James F., John W., Alfred and Thomas. The father was a Republican, and a strong Union man in the war. During this period he lost all his stock and valuables, and was obliged to take his family to Springfield for safety. He was at one time a member of the Baptist Church, but finally united with the Dunkard Church, in which he became a licensed minister. James F. Hubbard, his son, and the subject of this sketch, resides on the old homestead on which he was born. He received a fair education in the English branches, and after reaching a suitable age was married to Anna Colley, daughter of Thomas and May (Gibson) Colley, and by her became the father of twelve children, nine of whom are living: Henry, Tillman, Ida, Belle, Joseph, Emma, Orie, Johnnie and an infant unnamed. Mr. Hubbard owns a good farm, and is well respected by all who know him. The Colley family were from Virginia, and among the first settlers of Lawrence County, Mo., Thomas Colley being one of the county judges for many years. He has a son who now holds the same position.
