James E. Hinton, clerk of the circuit court of Newton County, Mo., is the son of Robert and Mary (Grist) Hinton, who were born in Maryland and Indiana, respectively. James E. was born in Rushville, Schuyler Co., Ill., July 20, 1848. He resided on his parents’ farm until he went to Mount Sterling, Ill., where he learned the tinner’s trade, at which he worked in Newton County from 1869 till 1882, when he was elected circuit clerk, and four years later was re-elected to the same position. Nettle Jackson became his wife April, 1879; she was born in Tennessee, but was reared in Newton County. Their children are as follows: James W., Robert S., Flora, Velma and Frank. Socially Mr. Hinton is universally respected and esteemed, and officially he has discharged the duties of his office in an able and efficient manner, and to the satisfaction of all his fellow men.
