Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James Addison Stockton was born in Jackson County, Ala., January 12, 1851, and is a son of Rev. Erasmus J. and Eliza (Benson) Stockton, who were born in Tennessee and Alabama, respectively. The father is a Cumberland Presbyterian minister of prominence, and the parent of fourteen children. James A., who is the eighth of their children, came with them to Dunklin County, Mo., in 1859. He was reared principally in Southeast Missouri, was educated in Cane Hill College, Ark., and began his journalistic career at Harrison, in the latter State, as editor of the Times. In 1877 he came to Newton County, Mo., and purchased an interest in the Neosho Times, since when he has been connected with the same. Minerva J. Sutton who was born in Newton County, and is a daughter of one of its early settlers, became his wife in 1877. They have three children: Maud, Archie and Stella, Mr. Stockton belongs to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, having been a member since thirteen years of age.
