Jacob Stewart, proprietor of the livery stable at Neosho, was born in Sussex County, N. J., July 7, 1825, and is the son of Andrew M. and Sarah (McIlrath) Stewart, both natives of New Jersey. The family moved from New Jersey to Ohio, and Jacob, until thirteen years of age, was reared in Cleveland. His early life was passed upon the farm, and before attaining his majority he left Ohio and removed to Illinois, where he remained until of age. He was then employed by the Western Pioneer Stage Company, and remained engaged in this business in different places until 1857. Two years later he engaged in the livery business in Franklin County, Mo., and during the war he did an extensive business in buying horses and mules for army use. In 1866 he came to Newton County, Mo., which he has since made his home, and he has followed the livery business during that period. Mr. Stewart has been twice married, the first one occurring in 1851 in Franklin County, Mo., to Miss Rhoda Calvin, who died in 1863, leaving four children: Finette, who married Ezra Robison; Aurilla, now Mrs. Jones; Mary A., wife of T. Slime, and Belle, now Mrs. Boyd. Mr. Stewart was married the second time, in February, 1869, to Miss Cynthia A. Price, a native of Tennessee. By this marriage three children were born: Crissie, Sallie B. and Georganna.
