Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Jacob Nutto, one of the reliable German citizens of Newton County, Mo., was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1836, and there received a fair education in the common branches. He came to America in 1858, locating in New York City, but later moved to Indiana, and still later to Louisville, Ky., where he worked at the shoemaker’s trade for about eighteen months. After residing in Owensboro, Ky., for about a year he lived for about the same length of time in Paducah; then went to Tennessee April 1, 1861, and November 30, same year, returned to Paducah, where he married Anna Suter, a daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Boller) Suter. By her he became the father of six children: Anna (Mrs. S. T. Bennett), Louisa (Mrs. William Culkins), Charles A., Edward, William and Fred. For some time after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Nutto resided in Paducah, Ky., and in 1865 located in Illinois, where he purchased a small farm. His next change of residence was to Kansas City, where he was engaged in the butcher business for about one year. Since 1869 he has been a resident of Newton County, Mo., and worked at the shoemaker’s trade in Neosho until 1879, when he purchased a farm of 160 acres, and about five years later became the owner of his present property, a farm consisting of 252 acres. He is a Republican in his political views, and is a member of the I. O. O. F.
