J. H. Robinson, a prominent farmer and business man of Marion Township, Newton Co., Mo., was born in Washington County, Va., May 29, 1842. He is a son of James and Priscilla (Preston) Robinson, also natives of Washington County, Va., who lived and died in their native county. J. H. Robinson was reared at the home of his parents, and secured his education in his native State. When nineteen years of age he entered the Confederate army, and served until the close of the war. His only brother, William Robinson, was killed in the battle of Piney. After the war the subject of this sketch moved to St. Louis, and, after traveling a few years in Missouri, went to Texas, where he was engaged in stock business for three years. Selling his property in Texas he removed to Arkansas, and engaged in general merchandising and farming at Bellefonte, Boone County, continuing for ten years, when he sold out and came to Newton County, Mo. He purchased his present beautiful farm of 200 acres in 1881, since which time he has built a fine residence and large barn. In the summer of 1885 he established an agricultural implement store at Granby, in which he still has an interest as a member of the firm of Robinson & Mitchell. Mr. Robinson’s marriage with Mary A. Burleson was solemnized at Bellefonte, Ark., October 6, 1872, and their union has been blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy. Those living are Charlie S., Adina Lee, William D. and James H. Both Mr. and Mrs. Robinson are earnest Christians. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and she of the Methodist. He is a member of Newton Lodge, A. P. & A. M., and of Bellefonte Chapter, Royal Arch Masons. Politically he is a Democrat.
