J. C. Walker, retired farmer, of Neosho, Mo., was born in the North of Ireland, December 28, 1814, and has within the last few years madeNewton County his home. His father, Joseph Walker, was a native of Leicestershire, England, and his mother, whose maiden name was Nancy Cyle, was of Scotch-lrish descent. The father was a prominent farmer and horse dealer. Their son, J. C., was reared in his native county, and followed agricultural pursuits until 1844, when he immigrated to the United States. He first settled in New York State, and engaged in the livery business. After the discovery of gold in California he was among the first to leave for the New Eldorado, going by way of the Isthmus. After remaining in California for two years engaged in mining with indifferent success, he went to Australia, and remained there for two years with very satisfactory results; but owing to injuries received on account of his horse being shot and falling with him, he had to abandon a prospect that was paying a large dividend, and return to the States, where, for eleven years, he made his home at Winona, Minn. He then went to Wilson County, Kas., where he lived for twenty-two years, after which he came to Neosho, Mo. He was married in 1832 to Miss Rosa Clark, who was also born in the North of Ireland, and they have four children living: Joseph, Ann (wife of Capt. Stratton, of Wilson County, Kas.). John, and Josie (now Mrs. Haughey). Mr. Walker has traveled extensively and profited by what he has seen. As a farmer and stock-raiser he is unsurpassed, having always given strict attention to whatever business he ventured into. He is a man of sterling integrity, positive in his convictions, and nothing can swerve him from what he thinks and knows is right. No man merits in a higher degree the success which has attended his career.
