Hezekiah M. Martin was born in Robertson County, Tenn., January 8, 1822, and is a son of Abraham and Mourning (Biggs) Martin, both of whom were born in North Carolina, the former in Rockingham and the latter in Edgecombe County, and who died April 29, 1862, and September 29, 1877, respectively. The father was a farmer, and had a family of seven children, Hezekiah M. being the fourth. Abraham Martin came to Missouri in the spring of 1843. Our subject was reared on a farm in Tennessee, came to Missouri in the fall of 1844, and a year later moved to Newton County. He owns 160 acres of land, which he has made by his own industry, and although a heavy loser by the war, he is now a well-to-do farmer. During the Civil War he served three years in the Second Kansas Cavalry, was in several battles and skirmishes, and returned home in October, 1865. His son, James M., was also a soldier in the Federal army during the war, in the Second Kansas Battery. He was captured and killed by the rebels. Mr. Martin was married on August 16, 1848, to Eliza Redfearn, who was born and reared in Robertson County, Tenn., and five children have blessed their union: Sarah (wife of John Smith), Rebecca (wife of Robert Smith), Missouri C. (wife of A. T. Porter), Christopher C., James M., who was killed. Mr. Martin was registering officer in 1866 and also in 1874. He is an intelligent and progressive farmer, one who has profited by his surroundings.
