Henry Pross, a successful and enterprising farmer near Talmage, is the son of Larison Pross, who was born near Lewisburg, Penn., learned the trade of a cabinet maker, and here married Miss Eliza Mears, who was of German descent. They became the parents of seven children: William, Elizabeth, Henry, Austin, Franklin, Matilda C., and one who died when young. The father moved to New Jersey, and there remained for two years, when he returned to Pennsylvania and lived at Catawissa, on the Sangamon River. He afterward went to Ohio, and settled near Circleville, but removed from there to Chillicothe, Ohio, where he carried on the cabinet maker’s trade, having followed the same at the other places. He died in 1872 at the age of sixty-eight years. He was formerly a Whig in politics; but in later years was a Republican. He had accumulated considerable property, which he lost in later life. His son, Henry Pross, was born in New Jersey, in 1825, and learned in early life the business of a cabinet maker from his father. He traveled in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. While in Indiana, and in 1853, he married Miss Eliza Dill, who bore him the following named children: George, Charles, Sallie, Austin and William. After marriage Mr. Pross settled eleven miles south of Seymour, Ind., and worked at his trade for seven years. He then moved to Des Moines. Iowa, and after living there for five years, in 1866 he came to Missouri, and settled in Newton County in 1872. His wife died in 1869, and in March, 1871, he married Mrs. Martha Smith, daughter of David and Elenor (Cockron) Luckey, of Missouri, formerly from North Carolina. To Mr. and Mrs. Pross were born two children: Pinkie and Pearl. Mr. Pross has since lived on his farm in Newton County, Mo. July 10, 1861, Mr. Pross enlisted as a private in Company E, Twenty-second Regiment Indiana Volunteers, for three years, or during the war, but was honorably discharged five months afterward on account of disabilities. Mr. Pross is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance, being vice-president of Talmage Alliance, and is a Republican in his political views. He is a wellrespected man and a good citizen.
