Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Dr. Henry L. Porter is the son of Archie T. and Susannah (Jennings) Porter, and was born in Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., December 28. 1849. His father was born and reared near Lynchburg, Va., and there while in early life learned the mill-wright trade. He afterward removed to Ohio, and there married his first wife, Abigail West, who dying soon afterward, be left the State of Ohio, and this time located in Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., in 1841. There lie met and married the wife who still survives him, who was a native of Natchez, Miss. Their son, Henry L. Porter, attended the public schools of Ste. Genevieve County, and afterward finished his education at Carleton Institute, Farmington, Mo. In 1868 he removed with his parents to Newton County, Mo., where his father purchased a farm two and a half miles from Seneca, where he (his father) remained till December 1, 1885, when he was killed by a runaway team. The widow, who survives him, still lives upon the old homestead near Seneca, Mo. After removing to Newton County the Doctor taught in the public schools of the county for some six years, when in 1870 he commenced the study of medicine under Dr. James Cass, of Seneca, Mo. He afterward attended the Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri, where he graduated with honor December 1, 1880. He then located in Seneca; has since taken two postgraduate courses, the last in 1887, and has not spared money nor midnight oil to thoroughly prepare himself for his chosen profession. In 1884 he became a member of the firm of Mitchell & Porter, druggists, Seneca, Mo. He is unmarried, is a member of the Newton County Medical Society, also of the I. O. O. F. and Masonic fraternities, and is one of Newton County’s leading and most honored citizens. Few physicians in Southwest Missouri have succeeded so well, and few have deserved such success. In his political views the Doctor is a Republican.
