Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Henry Hill, a successful agriculturist of Van Buren Township, is a descendant of an old American family that settled in Allen County, Penn., at an early date, and was of German origin. John F. Hill, the grandfather of our subject, married Catherine Ryder, and they were the parents of ten children: James, Reuben, Anna, Charles, Elizabeth, Daniel, Jacob, Enoch, William and Melinda. John F. Hill, who was a well-to-do farmer of Allen County, Penn., late in life moved to Ohio, and from there to Illinois, where he died. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a good man. His son, Charles Hill, the father of Henry Hill, was a native of Allen County, Penn., born near Easton, and was reared a farmer. He married Miss Sarah, daughter of George and Ann (Petticord) Daniel, and the fruit of this union was twelve children, who lived to maturity: George T., Henry, John M., Stephen, Edward E., Catherine A., Amanda, Thomas J., Melinda, Charles, Jr., William W. and Cynthia, all of whom are married. Charles Hill, Sr., moved to Quincy County, Ohio, with his father, at the age of sixteen, and lived there until several years after marriage. In December, 1888, he moved to Kosciusko County, Ind., and is still a resident of that county, being seventy-nine years of age, his birth having occurred in 1809. In his political opinions be is a Democrat, and in religious views a Methodist. His son, Henry Hill, was born in Seneca County, Ohio, on his grandfather’s farm, and went to Indiana with his father when a lad of six years. He learned the shoemaker’s trade, and in 1854 married Miss Mary E. Denney, daughter of Martin Denney. This marriage resulted in the birth of nine children: Charles M., Eliza N., William G., George T., Linnie B., Leopold, Jones, Wade H. and Henry C. Mr. Hill lived on his farm in Kosciusko County, Ind., until 1877, when he came to Newton County, Mo., and purchased his present farm, where he has lived ever since. He is a Greenbacker in his political opinions, and a man of unusual intelligence, honest principle, generally respected as a hard-working, industrious farmer. He is a Bible reader, and interprets its teachings for himself. He is a man of strong convictions, makes political speeches, and believes in the rights of the people as inculcated by such men as Washington, Jefferson and Gen. Jackson.
