George W. Bowen, Section 6, Franklin Township, Mo., was born in Ross County, Ohio, June 30, 1836, but was reared in Kosciusko County, Ind., where he learned the mason’s trade. His parents, Hezekiah and Jane (Hanewalt) Bowen, were natives of Ohio and Ireland, respectively, and the Bowen family were originally from Maryland. In 1868 our subject sold out and moved to Livingston County, Mo., where he remained until 1883, at which date he came to Franklin Township, Newton Co., Mo., and has since been engaged in agricultural pursuits. He is the owner of ninety-eight acres of good land, and is doing well. While living in Indiana he met and led to the altar Miss Catherine Shoe, a native of Carroll County, Ohio, of German parentage, and daughter of Jacob and Mary (Oswald) Shoe. Two sons and six daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bowen, as follows: Louisa, Lenora (wife of Spencer G. Bell, of Kansas City), Mary E. (wife of Edward Gephart, of Kansas City), Edward E., Alice, Hester A., John and Eva. Mr. Bowen was an Odd Fellow, has been a member of the school board of his district, and he and family worship at the Brethren Dunkard Church.
