Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. George Graves is manager of the Newton County Co-operative Association, which was organized in 1876, and is recognized as one of the leading business establishments of Neosho. The stock includes a large assortment of general merchandise, which is sold at very low rates, and owing to Mr. Graves’ efficient management the association has contributed a great deal to the reputation Neosho has as a trading center. Mr. Graves was born in CaIdwell County, Mo., April 29, 1838, but was reared in Des Moines County, Iowa, where he learned the tanner’s trade in his youth. In 1860 he came to Newton County, Mo., where he engaged in tilling the soil. During the late war he joined the Federal army, enlisting in the Sixteenth Missouri Cavalry, and operated on the frontiers of Arkansas and Missouri under Gen. Sanborn. Mr. Graves became county judge, and performed the duties of that office in a manner reflecting credit on his ability as an official. He was married in 1867 to Miss L. A. Heanell, a native of Newton County, Mo., and they have one daughter, Gertrude.
