Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

David C. Pierce is of Scotch and Irish descent, and is a son of Louis Pierce and a grandson of Franklin Pierce, who was born in Scotland and came to the United States with his parents, settling in Virginia. He was a soldier in the War of the Revolution at the age of sixteen years. He was an early pioneer of Kentucky, and there his son Louis was born in 1812. He was reared on a farm, and married Rachel Cowen, and by her became the father of following named children: Betsy, David C., Rebecca, Francis, Susan, Anna E. and Sallie. He was a prosperous farmer, and owned about 600 acres of land; was a deacon in the Baptist Church, is a Democrat, and was a Union man during the war. He is still living at the age of seventy-eight years; his wife is seventy-six years of age. David C. Pierce was born in Clinton County, Ky., in 1838, and his boyhood days were spent on his father’s farm. After serving some time in the State Militia, he, in 1863, went to Adams County, Ill., and worked on a farm for two years. He then rented a farm for two years, and was united in marriage with Lizzie Baker Rose, daughter of George W. and Eliza Rose, of Illinois. To Mr. and Mrs. Pierce have been born five children, two living, Mary and Minnie. In 1869 Mr. Pierce moved to Newton County and purchased a farm, which now consists of 440 acres. He is a Democrat in politics, and is an honorable, industrious man. His wife died in 1874, and four years later he married Elizabeth Elliott, a daughter of William and Phoebe Elliott. They have two children: Martha and Jesse.
