Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Conrad Gerbing, a substantial citizen and farmer of Newton County, Mo., was born in Prussia, in 1833, and when about eleven years of age came with his parents to the United States. George A. Gerbing was a stone mason, and worked at his trade in St. Louis. He died in 1880 on the farm now owned by his son Conrad; his wife and daughter died of cholera, in 1849, in St. Louis. Conrad Gerbing received a limited education, and in his youth learned the confectioner’s trade, which he followed for thirty years. He was married, August 18, 1859, to Ursula Hemmerly, and their union resulted in the birth of six children: George A., born June 24. 1860; John F., born November 10, 1861; Mary Ann, born November 15, 1864, died November 15, 1872; Magdalena Ursula, born May 15, 1866; Henrietta, born February 14, 1875; Marks P., born March 17, 1878; John J., born August 24, 1879. Mr. Gerbing engaged in the confectionery business in 1858, and did a prosperous business. He moved to Newton County, Mo., and bought 200 acres of land, where he now resides. He is an industrious farmer, and an upright, honorable man. He is a Republican in his political views, and is a member of the Lutheran Church. In 1862 he enlisted in Company A, Tenth Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry, United States Army, and served four years, doing guard duty at St. Louis.
