Ben Haas, dealer in furs, hides and produce at Neosho, Mo., was born in Baden-Baden, March 1, 1827, and is the son of Abraham and Mena Haas of the same place. He is the youngest of six children born to his parents, and was reared in his native country. In 1855 he came to the United States, and for five years lived in Philadelphia, after which he changed his residence to Newton County, Mo., where he has since continuously lived and carried on business. His father was also a dealer in wool, furs, etc., and to this calling the subject of this sketch was reared. Our subject was engaged in tanning, etc., after coming to this country, and few men are better known, he having been prominently identified with the business interests of the place since his residence here. As a business man he stands well and treats his customers liberally, indeed, there are living some who have been dealing with him for twenty-two years, a fact that indicates something of his popularity. Mr. Haas was married April 1, 1857, to Miss Julia E. Kaiser, a native of Hesse-Cassel, Germany, and to them were born five children, two sons and three daughters: Edward (a prominent busiaess man of Neosho), Charlie, Ida (now Mrs. Fred Mertens), Mena and Lillie (now Mrs. Bedwell).
