Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. A. M. Merrell, born March 11, 1854, in Shelby County, Mo., is a son of Richard H. Merrell, a native of Delaware, born March 30, 1814. He (Richard H.) came West with his parents, and has been a resident of Missouri about fifty years. His first wife was Mary McBroom, a native of Virginia. They were married in Shelby County, Mo., and became the parents of two children: Marion D. and David. Mrs. Merrell died in Shelby County, and about two years later Mr. Merrell married Harriett Henneger, a native of Shelby County. To them were born eight children, viz.: Alice S. (who died in infancy), Emma M. (wife of Thomas J. Robinson), Margaret (deceased), A. M., B. D., James B., Catherine (deceased) and John G. Richard H. Merrell settled in Newton County, Mo., in 1868, on 120 acres of land which he purchased from the railroad company. A. M. Merrell secured his education, in his native county, coming to Newton County, with his parents, when he was about fourteen years of age. He was united in marriage, March 29, 1880, with Cornelia Crumbliss, a native of the county, and a daughter of Hugh and Julia Crumbliss. Her parents were natives of Tennessee, and her mother is still living. To Mr. and Mrs. Merrell have been born three children: Linna A., George T. and Ida. Mr. Merrell has always followed farming as a vocation, and is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance of Newton County. In politics he acts with the Republican party.
