William G. Pettigrew, a stock-farmer of Linn Township, Moniteau County, was born in that county in 1833, and is a son of Mathew L. and Cynthia (Vivion) Pettigrew, natives, respectively, of Georgia and Kentucky. George Pettigrew, grandfather of William G., was a planter in Georgia, and reared a large family, of whom Mathew L. was the third son. The latter grew to manhood in Georgia, where he received a common-school education, and when about twenty years of age he went to Ste. Genevieve, Mo. About 1816 he located on Splice Creek, in what is now Moniteau County, and two years later married Cynthia Vivion, daughter of John Vivion, one of the pioneers of Moniteau County, where she was born and reared. Mathew L. Pettigrew died in 1874, and his widow the following year. They had twelve children, of whom Charles B., John V., Green W., William G., James T., Louisa Wood and Nancy Birdsong are living. Those deceased are Mary Stevens, Jane Smith, Elizabeth Marshall, Melvia Ann and an infant. William G. grew up on the farm, attended the common schools, and remained at home with his parents until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he went to Texas, returning about one year later, when he located on the farm where he has ever since lived. In 1864 he married Elizabeth Crum, a native of Virginia, and a daughter of James Crum, an early settler of Missouri. Mrs. Pettigrew died in 1871, leaving three children: Columbus J., Julia, now the wife of A. Graff, and Walter L. (deceased). Mr. Pettigrew next married a sister of his first wife, Julia A. Crum, who was also born in Virginia, and came to Missouri when about thirteen years of age, with her parents, James and Penelope (Reynolds) Crum, the former of whom died in 1864, and the latter in 1862. Of their thirteen children, seven are living. Mr. and Mrs. Pettigrew have no children. They are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in politics Mr. Pettigrew is independent.
