The Tipton Times, a weekly paper, independent in politics, and devoted to the interests of Tipton and surrounding country, is edited and published by Walt. M. Monroe. It was established in 1877, by Abel Marcy, and after his death the paper was conducted by his sons until November, 1885, when the present editor assumed charge. Walt. M. Monroe is a native of Morgan County, Mo., born in 1855, and is the son of Thomas and Gabriella (Martin) Monroe, natives of Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively. The paternal grandfather, Gen. William Monroe, was also a native of Tennessee, and immigrated to Missouri at an early day, being among the pioneer settlers of Central Missouri. He was quite prominent in politics, served several terms as a member of the Legislature; also served as senator, and was the first representative of Morgan County. Thomas Monroe came to Cooper County, Mo., with his parents when a child, and remained in that county until 1861. He was a surveyor, but he also operated a farm for many years. He was appointed to survey the Platte Purchase, and had served several times as clerk of the Legislature prior to this. He also served twelve years as circuit and county clerk of Morgan County. In 1860 he was elected to the State Senate, but in 1861 enlisted in the Confederate army as a colonel of Gen. Parson’s staff, and served until the close of the war. He then returned to Morgan County, remained there a short time, and then removed to Sedalia, Mo., where he was elected county surveyor of Pettis County for several terms. In 1880 he received the appointment of chief clerk in the register of land office. He died at Jefferson City, January 15, 1881, aged sixty-six years. He had been three times married, first, to Miss Hendon, who bore him one son, John W., who is now in Texas. Mr. Monroe’s second wife, Miss Martin, bore him four children: Thomas (now at Lebanon, Mo., engaged as salesman), Walt. M., L. E. (died in infancy) and Belle, who also died in infancy. Mr. Monroe’s third marriage was to Miss Delia Stallard, who bore him four children: Lula, Frank, Robert Lee, and one child who lives in Sedalia. Mr. Monroe was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and he was also a member of the A. F. & A. M. Walt M. Monroe was reared in Versailles, Mo., receiving his education in the common schools, and early learned the printer’s trade. He left Versailles in 1873, and engaged as local editor on the Sedalia Democrat until 1876, when he moved to a farm near Tipton, and there remained until 1885. He then moved to Tipton, and resumed his newspaper business. He was married, in 1877, to Miss Sallie Brooking, a native of Moniteau County, Mo., and to them were born six children: Russell, Charles B., Walt. K., Kate Brooking, Isabella and Helen. Mr. Monroe is a Democrat in his political views, and was appointed enrolling clerk to the Senate of the Twenty-fifth General Assembly of Missouri. He is a Mason, and is also a member of the A. O. U. W. He and Mrs. Monroe belong to the Baptist Church.
