Smith was reared to manhood on his father’s farm in Moniteau County, and was first married in 1876, to Miss Elizabeth Stowers, a native of Virginia, who died in 1885, leaving two children: Mamie and Willie. March 4, 1888, Mr. Smith married his present wife, whose maiden name was Lizzie Vernon, who was born in Miller County, and is a daughter of Wilbur Vernon. He and wife are members of the Baptist Church.
