Thomas H. Taylor was born in what is now Moniteau County, Mo., in 1841, and is the fifth of his father’s family. [For parents’ history see sketch of James D. Taylor.] From early boyhood he was reared to farm labor and assisted his father in developing their frontier farm. When the late Rebellion broke out he enlisted at Jefferson City in Company D, Fifth Missouri Cavalry for three years, and was mustered into service at Jefferson City. His command operated in the Southwest, and in 1864 he was honorably discharged at Rolla, Missouri. He soon after re-enlisted in Company B, Forty-eighth Missouri Infantry, and was soon after sent to Rolla, where he was stationed for some time, and was then ordered to Chicago, and there received his final discharge in March, 1865. After his return home, he resumed the peaceful pursuit of husbandry, and in 1869 was married in Morgan County to Sophia Immell, a native of Ross County, Ohio, and a daughter of John Immell, and soon after located on a farm of 131 acres given him by his father, only eight acres of which were under cultivation. His enterprises have been attended with good results, and he is now the owner of 465 acres of land, with over 300 acres cleared and cultivated, and is now building a fine residence. He raises a good grade of cattle, hogs and sheep, which bring him in a handsome sum annually. He is a strong supporter of Republican principles but is not an office seeker. He is a member of B. H. Porch Post No. 135, of the G. A. R., at Olean, and is also a member of Mount Pleasant Lodge No. 95, I. O. O. F. He and wife are the parents of the following children: Minnie, Charley, Richard, Maggie and Bettie, all of whom reside at home.
