Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Joseph Springer, farmer, is one of the five surviving members of a family of seven children born to Joseph B. and Catherine (Shelley) Springer, natives of the “Keystone State,” who came to Ohio in their youth, and were there married and lived until their respective deaths, March 22, 1879, and October 6, 1875. The former’s birth occurred March 17, 1812, and the latter’s May 28, 1816. Two of their sons, Jacob and Benjamin, died in the United States army. Those living are: Joseph S., Nancy J., John F., Elizabeth and Barbara Ella. Joseph S. is the eldest of the family, and was born in Wayne County, Ohio, in 1839, and there resided until he attained his majority, receiving a good practical education in the common schools. In 1864 he enlisted in the 100 days’ service, One Hundred and Sixty-ninth Ohio Regiment, and at the expiration of that time came home and re-engaged in farming. In 1866 he came to Missouri and located on the farm where he now lives, which is well-improved and is one of the best farms of the county. He is independent in politics, but has always taken an active interest in school matters. In 1859 he was married to Miss Ellen Ann Gibe, born in Lebanon County, Penn., in 1839, but in 1844 came with her parents, John and Elizabeth (Fischer) Gibe, to Ohio, and settled in Wayne County. The father died in 1861, aged seventy-two years, and the mother in 1881, at the age of eighty-two years. Five of their nine children are now living: Mariah, John, Moses, Ellen, Ann and Laah. Those deceased were Ezra, Roseann, Nathan and Joel. Mr. and Mrs. Springer have a family of five children: Amanda, John G., Jennie, Joel and Newton E. Jennie and Newton E. are the only ones at home. The family worship in the Methodist Episcopal Church.
