Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Joseph E. Bayne has been a resident of Missouri since 1866, and was born in Washington County, Pa., on the 25th of March, 1844, and is a son of Nathan Bayne, who was also born in Pennsylvania. The latter grew to manhood in his native State, and was there married to Sarah Evans, and resided in Washington County until his death, about 1858. Joseph E. Bayne was educated in the common schools of Washington County, and there grew to mature years. In August, 1862, he enlisted in the First Independent Battery, which was afterward consolidated with the Twenty-second Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served his country faithfully until he received his discharge at Pittsburgh in June, 1865. He participated in about thirty engagements, and after his return home engaged in farming. In the spring of 1866 he married Miss Lizzie Lyon, a native of the same county as himself, and soon after came to Missouri, residing for about three months in Moniteau County, and then returned home. In February, 1867, he again came to Missouri, and has since lived on his present farm, but for about the first twenty years he and his brother farmed in partnership. He is a stanch Republican in politics, and is a member of the G. A. R. He was nominated and elected county assessor in the fall of 1888, and has held other local offices. He and wife are the parents of eight children: Jennie, Frank and Fannie (twins), Lulie, Nellie, Henry, May and Joseph. The family worship in the Christian Church.
