Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John Wells, of Moniteau County, Mo., was born on his father’s farm, in Cole County, January 20, 1842. Jonathan Wells, his father, was born in Georgia, and when a boy was taken by his parents to Missouri, they being among the pioneer settlers of Cole County. Here Jonathan grew to manhood and married Nancy Chamers, after which he moved to Texas County, where he spent the rest of his days, his death occurring about 1851. His widow moved back to Moniteau County, and afterward married a Mr. Suggs. She died in December, 1888. John Wells was reared in Moniteau County, and during the late war served for a short time in the Confederate army, being taken prisoner at Newtonia while with Price on his raid through Missouri, and was kept in captivity until the close of the war. After his return home he was married in August, 1865, to Sally Ann Suggs, a daughter of A. J. Suggs, one of the pioneer settlers in Moniteau County. He located on some raw land, and made the fertile farm of 200 acres where he now lives, which is considered one of the best and neatest farms in the neighborhood. He has a substantial residence and good farm buildings of all kinds. By his first wife, who died in 1880, he became the father of the following family: Eliza Ann (wife of J. H. Hays), James W. and Tenna Gray. His present wife, who was formerly Miss Maggie Allee, has borne him one child: Luther E. Mr. Wells and family belong to the Baptist Church, and he is a deacon in the same.
