Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

John W. Smith. Prominent among the old and much respected citizens of Moniteau County stands the name of Mr. Smith, who was born in Butler County, Penn., in 1819, and is the son of Adam and Nancy (Wallace) Smith, natives of Eastern Pennsylvania. The parents came to Butler County, Penn., in childhood, were reared in the same neighborhood, were married there, and there in their turn reared a family of five sons and one daughter, two of whom are deceased. The children are named as follows: John W., Passy, Milton (deceased), Harvey, Benjamin J., Thomas B. and Margaret (deceased). The parents of these children were members of the Baptist Church, and active workers in the same. The father held several minor offices of the township, and was much respected by all who knew him. The mother died in 1865, at the age of sixty-five years, and the father died in 1868, at the age of seventy-four years. John W. Smith assisted his father on the farm, attended the subscription schools, and in 1843 began business for himself on a farm near the home place. He remained there until the spring of 1868, when he removed by water to Jefferson City, and from there by wagon to Clarksburg, where he resided until the fall of 1888. He then rented his place and moved to Clarksburg to live. He was married in 1842 to Miss Mary McKissick, a native of Butler County, Penn., born in 1816, and died May 9, 1886. She was a good mother, and lived a true Christian life. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, having joined the same in 1844, was very charitable, and was beloved by all who knew her. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith were born eight children, four of whom died in infancy, or when small. Those that lived to maturity were: Maria, Jemima, who was the wife of Dr. B. L. Galbreath, and who died leaving two children, one now deceased; James W. and Oliver L. Mr. Smith and daughter are members of the United Presbyterian Church. He is a Republican, a strong Prohibitionist, and one of the ablest men of Clarksburg. He reared his granddaughter, now Mrs. M. S. Wingate.
