John Muri, one of the most prominent and enterprising farmers and merchants of Linn Township, Moniteau County, is a native of Switzerland, and was born in 1816. His parents were John, Sr., and Anna (Libe) Muri, who were born and reared near Berne, the capital city of Switzerland. John Muri was born in 1783, and was a stone cutter by trade. In the spring of 1835, with his wife and three children, he set sail for America, on the vessel “Arien,” which landed in New York about the first of June. From there the family went to New Philadelphia, Ohio, where the father purchased an unimproved farm of eighty acres, and only three months later, in 1835, met his death, leaving his wife and three children in humble circumstances. After the death of his father, our subject, who was the only son, assumed charge of the farm. In 1838 the family moved to Missouri, and entered land in what was then Cole County, now Moniteau. This they sold in 1847, and purchased a farm on Factory Creek. The mother, who was born in 1785, died in Cooper County, Mo., in 1854. In 1868 Mr. Muri disposed of his property on Factory Creek and removed to near Tipton, Cooper County, where he remained until 1875, when he purchased property in Jamestown, Moniteau County, to which he removed, and upon which he has since lived. He married Christenia Moser, who was born in Prussia, in 1827, and is a sister of J. N. E. Moser, of California, Moniteau County. Twelve children have blessed this union, all of whom are living, viz.: Mary and Caroline (twins), the latter the wife of A. Roedal; William, married and living in Clarksburg; John N., Anna, Elizabeth, wife of L. F. Burgi; Charles H., B. Franklin, Matilda, wife of Rev. C. C. Stahman; Sophia, Edward and Emma. The parents are consistent members of the German Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Muri and his sons are the owners of several fine farms in Linn Township, and are also interested in the hardware business in Jamestown, in all of which they are successful. To the parents of our subject were born five children, two dying in Switzerland; Anna Kirshman died in 1881, and Mary Bauer resides in Moniteau County, Mo.
