Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John F. Tising, druggist and general merchant at High Point, Moniteau Co., Mo., was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 26, 1841. His father, Frederick Tising, and his mother, whose maiden name was Sophia Oehlman, were both natives of Hanover, Germany, born in 1820 and 1821 respectively. They crossed the ocean when children, and settled first in Ohio. The father was a blacksmith by trade. In their family were five children, four living: John F., George (died when one year old), Elvina McKay, Cornelia Brossard and Augusta McKay. John F. Tising, the eldest of this family, remained in Cincinnati, Ohio, until thirteen years of age, attending St. Xavier’s Seminary, and began life for himself at the age of twenty-one. He followed various kinds of employment until 1874, when he established a drug store at High Point, Mo., and followed this business until 1880, when he added a stock of general merchandise to his stock of drugs, which he still handles. He carries a stock of goods valued at $6,000. Mr. Tising was married January 5, 1864, to Miss Margaret Vanpool, a native of Cole County, Mo., born July 20, 1842, and the daughter of George H. and Sallie (Lewis) Vanpool, natives of Kentucky. Mr. Vanpool was a farmer by occupation. He was the father of eight children, seven living, Mrs. Tising being the eldest. To Mr. Tising’s marriage were born ten children, eight living: Rosa Sterling, Minnie, George, Flora, Heeman, Lloyd, Lillie and Laura. Those deceased were named Sarah E. and Cecil. Mr. Tising was in the Enrolled Militia during the war, was orderly sergeant, and was discharged in 1863. He has been justice of the peace for twelve years, a position which he still holds, is a member of the I. O. O. F., and is a Republican in politics, having cast his first presidential vote for Abraham Lincoln in 1864.
