John B. Stewart, M. D., of Clarksburg; Mo., was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, in 1838, and is the son of William and Jane (Burden) Stewart, natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio respectively. William Stewart was born in 1812, and came with his parents to Ohio when three years of age. They located in Guernsey County, and here William attained his majority on a farm, and ever afterward followed tilling the soil. He was very successful at this occupation, and owned a large tract of land. He died in full communion with the United Presbyterian Church. The mother of our subject is still living in the home village, and is a member of the above-mentioned church. She was born in 1813. Of the eleven children born to her marriage, nine are now living: John B., David M., William, Thomas and Elizabeth (twins), James and Anna (twins), Hannah and Fannie. Those deceased were twin boys who died in infancy. John B. Stewart was reared to manhood on the home place, attended the district school, and at the age of fifteen entered the Madison College, where he remained several terms. He had just finished the sophomore year when the war broke out and he enlisted August 14, 1861, in the First Ohio Cavalry for three years. He rendered active and honorable service until about ten days after the Chickamauga fight, and while he was on duty at a place called Cotton Landing, on the Tennessee River, he was taken prisoner and removed to Richmond, Va., where he was held two months. He was then taken to Danville, Va., remained there five months, and was then placed in the hospital brigade. He was paroled May 2, 1864, and remained at Annapolis until August, when he received a furlough to go home. He returned to his regiment, and was mustered out at Columbus, Tenn., in October, 1864. After returning home he resumed the reading of medicine (having read some before the war), attended lectures at Columbus, Ohio, from 1865 to 1866, and graduated from that institution in 1867. He then came to Clarksburg, Mo., where he has since been engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1876 he took a course of lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in St. Louis, Mo., and from this institution he received a diploma. He then returned to Clarksburg, and now enjoys a good practice. He was married in October, 1866, to Miss Elizabeth Fordyce, a native of Guernsey County, Ohio, born in 1841, and six children, four now living, were the result of this union: Margaret (died at the age of fourteen months), Ruth L., Barton (who died at the age of nine months), Mary, Lizzie and D. Fordyce. Dr. Stewart is a member of the John McDowell Medical Society, and is not only successful and a favorite in his profession, but is thoroughly liked by all. He is a Republican in politics, and is active in school matters, being one of the supporters of the Clarksburg College. Mrs. Stewart is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
