Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Jacob Niuffer, farmer of Moniteau County, Mo., was born in Ross County, Ohio, in 1838, his parents being Christian and Margaret (Gunther) Niuffer, who were born in Germany, and came to the United States with their parents when children, settling in Ohio, where they grew to maturity. They were married, and have since resided in Chillicothe, the father being in his eightieth year. He was formerly a member of the I. O. O. F., and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Eleven of their twelve children are living, Jacob being the second son. He was educated in the schools of Chillicothe, and in 1859 started out to earn his own living, coming to Missouri in the fall of that year, and has since been engaged in farming. When the war broke out he engaged in the struggle between the North and South, and for about three months served in the Home Guards, then went to Kansas and enlisted in the Eighth Kansas Volunteers, and received his discharge at Ft. Leavenworth January 14, 1866, having participated in the battles of Perryville, Lancaster, Hoover’s Gap, Kenesaw Mountain, Stone River, Chickamauga, Atlanta, Ga., Jonesboro, Ga., Love Joy Station, Franklin, Tenn., Missionary Ridge, Nashville, and others. He was promoted from a corporal to first lieutenant, and the last eight months held the rank of captain. He was married on the 1st of July, 1866, to Jennie Ellis, who was born in Brown County, Ohio, in 1842, a daughter of Noah and Sarah Ellis, the former being long since dead, and the latter still living, being now the widow of Henry Crute. Her first union was blessed with four children, and her last one with one. Mr. and Mrs. Niuffer have five children: Sallie E., Lula, Franklin E., Stella M. and Myrtle M. They are all at home, and all are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with the exception of Lula, who belongs to the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Niuffer is a stanch Republican in politics, and is a member of the G. A. R., Henry Brown Post No. 276.
