Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Jacob Hainen, Sr., was born in Moniteau County, Mo., in 1843, and is a son of John and Mary Ann (Kline) Hainen, natives of Europe, who came to America in 1841 and located in Missouri. At the age of sixteen John Hainen was bound out by his father to learn the blacksmith’s trade; he was married about 1835, and after his immigration to this country he followed his trade many years, until disabled, about twelve or fifteen years before his death, which occurred January 22, 1877, at the age of sixty-seven years; he was a member of the Catholic Church. The mother of our subject is still living on the old homestead in Linn Township, Moniteau County; she was born in 1816, and still enjoys good health for one so advanced in years. Of her ten children but four are now living, viz.: Catherine, Nichols, Jacob and Peter. John died at the age of thirty-three years, and three died in childhood within fifteen days of each other with the dread disease of scarlet fever. Jacob Hainen grew to maturity in his native county, and attended a German school a number of terms. At the age of twenty-two he purchased a farm two and a half miles from Tipton, containing 225 acres, which he has cleared and improved. He served in the State Militia at the outbreak of the late war, and in 1865 enlisted in Company A, Forty-fifth Missouri Regiment, Union Army, being mustered out at St. Louis the same year. November 30, 1865, he married Mary E. Shreack, who was born in Moniteau County, Mo., March 22, 1846, and is a daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth Shreack, natives of Germany; the father was born December 19, 1809, and came to America in 1836, where he still lives. He was a weaver in his native country, but engaged in farming after his emigration; his wife who was born in 1816, died in 1882. Both were members of the Catholic Church, and of their five children only two are living: Mary Ann Lutz, and the wife of our subject. Eleven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hainen, viz.: Mary L., Johanna E., Catherine J., Anna Louise, Annie Gertrude, John J., who died at the age of fourteen months and fourteen days; William P., Rosina, Laura T., John E. and Emma A. The parents are members of the Catholic Church, taking active interest in all church and school enterprises.
