Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Fredrick Herrnleben, an early settler of Linn Township, Moniteau County, is a native of Bavaria, and was born February 12, 1824. His parents were Christian and Barbara (Kuefner) Herrnleben, natives of Bavaria, where the father followed farming until July 4, 1840, when, with his four sons, he made his way to Hamburg, and July 26 took passage for America on a sailing vessel named “Gibson.” They were on the sea sixty-six days, landing at New York, from which place they went to Philadelphia, and later to Pittsburgh; the following October they reached Boonville, Mo., where the father purchased land, to which he removed and spent the remainder of his life, He was three times married, twice in his native country and again after his emigration; by his first marriage there were two children: Fredrick, our subject, and George, the latter now living in Nevada; of the five children born to the second union, Conrad was killed at Pilot Knob, Mo., in 1864, and John died soon after the war from injuries received while serving in the same company of the State Militia as his brother; Christopher, Christina and Elizabeth are living. To the third marriage of Christian Herrnleben were born four children: William, Louisa, Anna and Johena. The father was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the time of his death. Fredrick Herrnleben served an apprenticeship of three years at paper-making in his native country, but has never since followed that trade. He received but a common-school education, and assisted his father on the farm until twenty-two years of age. In 1850 he went to California by wagon, spending 126 days on the road; he returned by boat in 1854, and soon afterward located in Linn Township, Moniteau County, where he has since lived. During the late war he served three years in the Enrolled Militia. In 1855 Mr. Herrnleben married Caroline Moser, who was a native of Prussia, and came to America when a child; she died in 1873, leaving ten children, viz.: Louisa, Charles E., Matilda, Lizzie, Mary, Benjamin F., Henry, Emma, Laura and Anna. Mr. H. is one of the leading men of Linn Township, and is a supporter of the Evangelical Church.
