Frederick W. Sarman, farmer and merchant of California, Mo., was born near Schildche Beleifelt, Prussia, on the 29th of March, 1843. His father, who also bore the name of Frederick W., was a linen manufacturer in his native land, Prussia, but on coming with his family to America in 1851 he engaged in farming. They took passage at Bremen and landed at New Orleans after a six weeks’ ocean voyage on a sailing vessel. They first resided in St. Louis for two years, then farmed for some time about six miles east of California. The father afterward moved to the town, and made his home with his son, Frederick, until September, 1887, when he went back to Germany, and there died April 13, 1888. He was formerly a soldier in the German army, and also in the late war in the United States, being a member of an Illinois cavalry regiment. He was twice married, and to his first union four children were born, two of whom died, leaving surviving, Frederick W. and Johanna Wilhemina. The children of his second union are Wilhemina, Henry F., John and Amelia. The immediate subject of our sketch was reared partly on a farm in Moniteau County, and partly in California, and while residing in the latter place was engaged in teaming and clerking. On the 16th of July, 1861, he enlisted in the First Missouri, United States Reserve Corps Volunteers, and re-enlisted February 20, 1862, in the Twenty-sixth Regiment of Missouri Infantry. He was discharged at Huntsville, Ala., February 28, 1864, and on the 29th of February, 1864, was re-enrolled as a veteran volunteer in the same regiment, serving until August 13, 1865, when he was finally honorably discharged at Little Rock, Ark. He took an active part in the siege of New Madrid, Mo.; siege of Island No. 10, 1862; Tiptonville, Miss.; Fort Pillow, Miss.; siege of Corinth, Miss.; battle of Iuka, Miss.; battle of Corinth, Miss., October 3 and 4, 1862; battle of Port Gibson, Miss., May 10; battle of Raymond, Miss., May 12; battle of Jackson, Miss., May 14; battle of Champion’s Hill, Miss., May 16, 1863; siege of Vicksburg, Miss., 1863; battle of Missionary Ridge, Tenn., November 25; siege of Savannah, Ga., 1864; campaign of the Carolinas, 1865, and was at the review in Washington City. After returning home he began clerking for Mr. H. C. Finke, remaining with him until 1872, when he opened a saloon, which he conducted for about thirteen years. He owns a valuable farm near California, which he rents, and lives in a handsome residence near the town. May 8, 1872, he was married to Mary L. Duwenick, by whom he has seven children: Frederick Walter, born October 14, 1873; John Frederick Wilbur, born October 10, 1876; Henry Louis, born September 28, 1878; William Rulan, born October 23, 1880; Julia Louisa, born January 25, 1883; Frederick William, born June 2, 1886; Anna Alma, born February 14, 1889.
