David B. Taylor is a Missourian, born in Moniteau County, March 19, 1838, being the fourth child born to Richard W. and Lydia (Beard) Taylor, a history of whom is given in the sketch of James D. Taylor. David B. remained on the home farm until he attained his majority, and then made a trip across the plains to Pike’s Peak, but after a short stay there returned home. After farming one year the war broke out, and he enlisted in the six months’ service, and after the expiration of the term enlisted in Company D, Fifth Missouri Cavalry, for three years, and was assigned to duty in southern Missouri, escorting baggage, mail trains, etc. He was after Price when he made his second raid, and was in the battles of Boonville, Little Blue, Independence, and followed Price out of the State. April 1, 1865, he was mustered out of service at St. Louis. He was color-bearer of his company. After his return he farmed one year with his father, and April 5, 1866, he was married to Miss Lucy Jane Manning, a native of Missouri, and a daughter of early settlers of the State from Tennessee. Mr. Taylor’s father gave him 130 acres of land, which he has since increased to 460 acres by industry and good management. Two hundred acres are choice bottom land, and make one of the finest farms in this section. He has an orchard of over 200 trees of all kinds of fruit, and contemplates setting out 500 more apple, and 150 pear, cherry and plum trees. He keeps a good grade of stock. He is quite active in politics, and votes with the Republican party. He is a member of the G. A. R., the Agricultural Wheel, and he and family worship in the Baptist Church. His children are as follows: Ella E., James L., Byron H., Lydia F., H. Owen, Joseph A., John E., Mamie J. and David Ray.
