Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Charles C. Treiber, merchant of California, Mo., is a native of Saxony, Germany, born December 27, 1854, and is a son of Charles C., Sr., and Pauline (Schumann) Treiber, natives of the same province. The elder Treiber was a farmer and merchant, and also owned a coal mine in the old country. In 1878 he came to America, locating in Cooper County, where he bought a farm and remained five years. He then went back to Germany, and is residing there at the present time. The mother is deceased. They were the parents of six children, five now living: Charles C., Fred, Emil, Minnie and Annie, who is in Germany. Charles C. Treiber, subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in his native country. He attended the State College of Saxony, and served one year in the German Army Artillery. He left home at the age of twelve years, attended different schools for some time, and then engaged in the mercantile business at Leipzig, where he remained until coming to America. In the spring of 1878 he took passage at Bremen and landed in New York, but soon left there and came on to Moniteau County, Mo., where he was engaged as clerk for some time. In 1879 he embarked in the mercantile business for himself, and has since carried it on. He was a partner with Mr. Schreiber for some time, or until the latter’s death, since which time he has conducted the business alone. He carries a full line of clothing, boots, shoes, hats, caps and gents’ furnishing goods. He is a member of the A. O. U. W., Select Knights, and is also a member of the I. O. O. F., being Noble Grand in the latter lodge. He is one of the present aldermen of California.
