A. J. Light was born in Lebanon County, Pa., in 1840, being the sixth of a family of eleven born to Samuel and Catherine (Bahl) Light, who were born, lived and died in the “Keystone State.” The father was a brewer the most of his life, and died in 1886, aged nearly eighty years. The mother died in 1872. A. J. Light received his education in the high school of Lebanon, and after working in a mercantile establishment for some time he engaged in teaching. In 1862 he enlisted at Lebanon for nine months in Company K, One Hundred and Twenty-seventh Pennsylvania Infantry, and was assigned to the Potomac department, and was a participant in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He was mustered out of service June 1, 1863. He then returned to Lebanon and re-engaged in teaching, and was married there, in 1863, to Louisa Zimmerman, who died the following year. Mr. Light then went to Ohio, and was married in Wooster, Wayne County, in 1867, to Caroline Bivens, a native of Pennsylvania, and a daughter of Alexander and Sophia (Trexel) Bivens, also of that State. The father was a farmer and shoemaker, and immigrated to Ohio at an early day, where he and wife spent their declining years. After his second marriage Mr. Light resided two years in Pennsylvania, and in 1869 moved to Ohio, and from there to Moniteau County, Mo., in 1874, where he bought a partly improved farm of eighty acres, but now owns a good farm consisting of 160 acres. He has set out a good orchard, and in 1888 erected a substantial barn. He raises considerable stock, and is doing well financially.
