Below is a family biography included in The History of Miller County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. J. L. Conner, physician at Brumley, Miller Co., Mo., was born near the line of Morgan and Miller Counties December 24, 1845, and received his education in the common schools at Blue Springs. He taught school two terms, after which he moved with his parents to Camden County, and there continued teaching. In 1866 he went to Lebanon and attended Prof. Laughran’s Institute one year, after which he returned to Miller County and again resumed teaching. While following this occupation he was also reading medicine, and in the fall of 1867 he went to Lebanon, engaged as clerk, and at the same time still continued his study of medicine with his uncle, Dr. McComb. In September, 1869, he went to Ann Arbor, Mich., took one course of lectures, and then returned to Lebanon, where he became associated with his uncle for a short time. Afterward he settled permanently at Brumley, and is now the only physician at that place. He was married May 23, 1875, to Miss Elnora Singletary, a native of Ohio, and they have three children: Lura B., Bernice E. and John L., Jr. Dr. and Mrs. Conner are members of the Christian Church, and have the esteem and respect of all who know them. Dr. Conner has been coroner of Miller County for two terms; he is a member of both the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges.
