Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William Magee (deceased) was born in Pennsylvania on October 30, 1808. He was a son of John Magee (deceased). When quite small William Magee’s parents took him to Erie County, Penn., where he received a fair education in, the common schools. When a young man he went to Cass County, Ill., and was married on August 28, 1845, to Mrs. Malvina Piper, widow of Samuel M. Piper and daughter of Joseph Rutheford. Mrs. Magee was born, in Knox County, near Knoxville, Tenn., and when but eight years of age removed with her parents to Illinois. She is the mother of two children by her first marriage, viz.: Mary A. and Samuel M. The latter was a soldier for the Union in the late war, and was killed in the battle of Trenton, Tenn., the first engagement in which he participated. By her marriage with Mr. Magee she is the mother of ten children, eight of whom are living. They are Emily J., Jasper N., E. Ellen, John J., Julius R., Benjamin F., Susan M. and Charles B. Mr. Magee came to McDonald County, Mo., in 1867. Two years later he located on the farm in Pineville Township where his widow and children still reside. He was a prosperous farmer, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His death occurred at his home on May 11, 1883.
