Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William E. Bookout (deceased) was born in Knox County, East Tenn., on June 6, 1816, and was a son of Marmaduke Bookout, also deceased. William E. Bookout removed to Red River County, Tex., in 1849, thence to Jasper County, Mo. in 1865. In March 1870 he came to McDonald County, settling where his family now resides, In White Rock Township. He was twice married; first, he married Lovina Moore, a daughter of Austin Moore, by whom he became the father of two children, Miranda and Mary J., both now dead. Miranda married Stephen Wallace, and had one child; William L. Mary married Thomas Prigmore, and became the mother of one child, John L. Mr. Bookout’s first wife died in 1850 and on July 28, 1851, he wedded Mary M. Woods, a daughter of Mason Woods, of Knox County, Tenn. Two children were born to this union, one of whom is living, Leona A., married James D. Young, and now live with her mother. Mr. Bookout was an enterprising and prosperous farmer, and accumulated considerable property. At his death he left over 400 acres of land to his heirs. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and was respected and beloved by all who knew him. He passed away on February 18, 1888. Mrs. Bookout’s son-in-law manages the old homestead. He was born in White Rock Township, McDonald County, on August 8, 1849, and is a son of Urich S. Young, deceased. The latter emigrated from Indiana to McDonald County over forty years ago. James D. Young has always been engaged in agricultural pursuits, and has a farm of 116 acres in his own right. He is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance and of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. and Mrs. Young are the parents of six children, viz.: William A., Ida B., Minnie, Pearlie, Elmer and Ollie.
