James N. Gist, a prosperous liveryman of Pineville, Mo., is a native of Polk County, Mo., born on November 5, 1842. He is a son of John P. Gist (deceased). During his boyhood James M. spent his summers on the farm and his winters in Stockton, Cedar Co., Mo. He served in the Civil War, first as a member of Company G, of Col. Burns’ regiment, and later in Company G, under Col. Hooper. After hostilities ceased he went to Texas, and remained there ten years, engaged in farming and teaming. He then returned to Cedar County, Mo., coming to Pineville in December, 1879. He engaged in farming, which he continued for a short time, and in April, 1881, received the contract for carrying the mail between Pineville and Neosho, but abandoned it in a few months. For the past four years he has been engaged in the livery business, and, being of an accommodative turn and thoroughly understanding his business, is meeting with deserved success. He has one daughter, Martha E.
